This talk, given in 2002 as part of Stanford’s long-running Computer Systems Laboratory Colloquium series, posits that syncopation—the kind of rhythmic play found in abundance in jazz and swing—is a design practice that will be essential to humanizing our interactions with technology in the 21st century.
