The “city symphony” is a genre of film that documents the kinetic life of a city through the lens of a camera, and I’ve been exploring ways to apply this concept to the city of Santa Clarita, California. Using a 3D model of the city’s terrain and building footprints, which I then color and distort, I create digital prints that highlight and exaggerate the gestural quality of the city’s buildings as they spill across the terrain. The works also draw upon the history of visual music scores, as the precision of the 3D rendering and the abstract qualities of the buildings suggest a complex system of notation shaping the lives of the city’s residents.
